Is a chlorine-free swimming pool possible?

Recently, the world has a tendency to return to nature in every sense. Reducing the proportion of plastic in daily use, giving weight to organic products in food, preferring clothes produced with more natural dyes are examples of this. Even in cleaning chemicals, less paraben-phosphate etc. Chemicals containing less allergens are preferred, although their prices are high. As such, the use of industrially produced strong disinfectants in pools is an issue that users are seriously uncomfortable with. Chlorine is the most widely used and therefore the most well-known of these chemicals. Chlorine is an industrial chemical used for various purposes in many sectors. Chlorine is not very suitable for direct human use, as it is mainly produced for industry. If it is used indirectly, it should be diluted to certain proportions. Chlorine produced for industry in pools is used by adding certain proportions to the pool water. The substance that creates that famous “bad smell” in the pool and irritates the eyes and skin is chloramine. Due to its chlorine structure, dead skin cells in the pool form a product called chloramine by bonding with organic components such as sweat or urea, and it works in this way. The more odor in the pool, the more chlorine is needed. Shocking or oxidation is one of the most important options for cleaning chloramine from the pool.

Why chlorine is not wanted in the pool;
  1. It causes serious skin irritations and allergies in users
  2. It triggers or even causes asthma attacks due to the smell of chlorine and gaseous chlorine in people with ailments such as asthma.
  3. Causes eye redness and greater irritation, especially when used above 1 ppm concentration
  4. In pools where industrial chlorine is used, the smell of chlorine penetrates the skin of the users and the smell of chlorine passing through the pool water for 1 day is felt on the skin.
  5. Due to the use of industrial chlorine, pool flooring and equipment are damaged, and stainless accessories rust and deteriorate.

For these reasons, users who are sensitive to the use of chlorine in swimming pools have always sought different solutions that can reduce chlorine in pools. With the development of technology, "chlorine" is no longer the only option as a disinfectant. So now an “industrial chlorine-free pool” is possible.

The methods of cleaning your swimming pool by keeping the chlorine level to a minimum are as follows;

Salt Generator:

Instead of giving chlorine directly to the pool, it helps to clean the pool by producing "natural chlorine" and "oxidative hydroxyl agents" from the salt (NaCl) added to the water by a method called electrolysis. The generator, which produces hypochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite from the salt dissolved in the pool water, thus disinfects the pool water. Since the natural chlorine and hydroxyl agents working in this disinfection do not form harmful compounds called "chloramine", they do not cause bad odor, skin irritation and equipment damage. The salt generator also eliminates the need to shock the pool by using extra chlorine. At the same time, both salt ions and natural chlorine and hydroxyl ions accompany the water, keeping the disinfection sustainable.

Although the cost of salt generators seems to be higher at first glance, considering the pool maintenance throughout the season, it can be said that only very affordable salt is used in this system and it is a profitable method compared to the use of traditional chemicals.

 Silver-Copper Ionization: With this system, which allows copper and silver electrodes to ionize and mix with water, bacteria in the water are destroyed by copper-silver ions. This system is a method that does not require the use of chlorine. It does not create odor. With this system, which reduces the use of chemicals by 80 percent, human health is largely protected. Since this system contains copper-silver agents as accompanying disinfectants in the water, it significantly prevents bio-film formation and algae formation on the walls. It makes the pool water look bright and lively.

 Ozone generator: A good alternative to chlorine disinfection method can be specified as ozone. Ozone, an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas, cleans water faster than chlorine and does not harm the skin and eyes.

Unlike chlorine, ozone generators do not give water byproducts other than oxygen. However, ozone generators need very little chlorine to complete the cleaning. This low level (0.1-0.3 ppm) chlorine requirement can be achieved by combining it with a salt generator as “natural chlorine”. Thus, the pool can be used as a completely natural pool.

      UV Rays: Another alternative to the disinfection method with chlorine is lamps that emit light in the UV (ultra violet) wavelength. In use, the pool water is passed over these lamps and all bacteria and viruses in the water in contact with UV light are killed. No chemicals are added to the pool in UV disinfection. However, in this system, like ozone, it shows its effect instantly, and does not leave a disinfectant agent that will accompany the water afterwards. It shows its effect and leaves the water to itself.
It would be appropriate to use a very low level of accompanying disinfectant (chlorine, bromine, copper-silver ions) especially for microorganisms that will nest at points containing microscopic recesses such as pool walls, mosaic joints, balance tank and overflow channels. This low level (0.1-0.3 ppm) chlorine requirement can be achieved by combining it with a salt generator as “natural chlorine”. Thus, the pool can be used as a completely natural pool.

Biological Cultures: Natural or biological pools are one of the most trendy applications of recent times. Here, harmful microorganisms in the water are eliminated thanks to a good bio filtration and bio bacteria that settle in the root nodules of the aquatic plants to be placed in the pool. No accompanying chemical disinfectant is used in this system. This system simulates water filtration in a river or lake in nature. The only difference from nature is that there is no fresh water supply here. The water in the pool is constantly cleaned in a natural filtration effect. Bio filtration system is generally used in combination with ozone or UV disinfection systems. Bio or Natural swimming pools are currently made in the form of individual applications and home pools.
